Michael was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He attended Mott Community College in Flint, then transferred to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he earned his B.S. in Biology. He then pursued his medical degree at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, where he developed a passion for surgery. After medical school, Michael completed a one-year research fellowship focused on minimally invasive surgery in Boston, Massachusetts. He then began his general surgery residency as preliminary resident at the University of Michigan for one year before beginning residency at Michigan State University/Sparrow Hospital. Michael has a strong interest in Trauma/Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery, which initially developed as an EMT during college. He is also interested in research and medical education, and plans to complete fellowship training after graduation. Outside of surgery, his interests include spending time with his wife, Caitlin, and playing basketball and chess.
